The Mathematics of Planet Earth 2013 project has developed activities that aimed to show how mathematics plays a central role in matters related to the planet Earth.
Throughout the world various entities dedicated the year 2013 to this project. It was mission of the project:
- Encourage research in the identification and resolution of fundamental questions about the Earth;
- Encourage educators at all levels of education to report problems related to the planet Earth;
- Inform the public about the essential role of the mathematical sciences to meet the challenges of the planet Earth.
Major themes:
- A planet to discover: oceans; weather and climate; processes of the mantle; natural resources; solar systems;
- A planet supported by life: ecology, biodiversity, evolution;
- A planet organized by humans: political, economic, social and financial systems, organization of transport networks and communication, resource management, energy;
- A planet at risk: climate change, sustainable development, epidemics; invasive species, natural disasters.
